From the folks over at Information is Beautiful comes this revealing infographic detailing the websites and keywords China has or is currently hiding from its citizens. Some of them are vaguely surprising–apple.com, amazon.com, boingboing.net, espn.com, flickr.com–while others like democracy.com, “brain wash,” and “human rights” are pretty obvious. With Google and China in a standoff, we should expect to hear more and more data about Chinese censorship in the coming months.
This evening (January 19), artist Naoko Ito will be having a reception for his thesis project at the Visual Arts Gallery in New York City. His most recent series is based on the notion of Urban Nature, which finds Ito taking tree branches and placing them in jars. French artist Michel de Broin built a massive disco ball that measures 23.6-feet in diameter and contains a whopping 1,000 individual mirrors. Then he attached the sphere to a crane 165-feet in the air and suspended it in the Jardin du Luxembourg during the Nuit Blanche event in Paris. After directing spotlights at it from various locations around the city, de Broin hit a switch and let the party commence. We’ve included a bunch more photos below so you can see just got big this thing really is. [Courtesy of Dude Craft via Life Lounge] Fox asked filmmaker Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) to make a documentary about The Simpsons to celebrate the show’s 20th anniversary. In case you missed it, we’ve embedded the clip above. If you’ve got 45 minutes, it’s worth the watch.
Take a bunch of over-sized thread, weave it together, and bam! you’ve got this gigantic decorative seat that looks outrageously comfortable. They’re called, ahem, “Phat Knits,” and come from Netherlands designer, Bauke Knottnerus. Check out three more below.
Wonder what your neighbors have on their Netflix queue? I wasn’t, but thanks to this interactive Google map, anyone can browse the top 50 rentals from 2009 according to zip codes in a dozen cities around the country. For instance, folks in New York rented Milk, Twilight and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button more than any other flicks last year. Head over to the NY Times to play around with the interactiveness and see where your hood stacks up.
This mosquito catcher by Berlin-based artist, Johannes Vogl, seems a bit dangerous and unnecessary. It’s also probably a misnomer, because catching them is the opposite of what would happen. Overlooking personal safety and an apt handle, I think it would be a fully enjoyable experience to massacre as many bugs as possible with a massive, DIY torch. Just make sure the gas is off and that nobody comes popping out from the bathroom mid-blast. [Courtesy of Today and Tomorrow] I’ve been wondering when someone was going to visualize–be it on screen, television or stage–President Obama’s 2008 campaign. In fact, if I were a betting man, which I am, I would suggest that he will end up being the subject of more books, films, plays and television programs than any president in history. After only 12 months in office, the prez has already been honored with one. Well, maybe honored isn’t the right word. An American man named Randall Hutchins both wrote and composed, Hope! The Obama Musical Story, which will open in Frankfurt, Germany, on January 17, 2010. If the clip above is a proper indication, this thing looks cheesy and outrageous. Check it out, it’s funny. My goodness this story has the potential to land those involved a high-six-figure book deal, or in the very least an abundance of Internet fame. It goes a little something like this: A British man talks in his sleep, says some wacky, vulgar and generally absurd shit, and his wife writes everything down. Then she started a blog, which is really her first mistake. Stuff like this has to go on Twitter these days. So, ma’am, you’re idea is great, but if you want to make some serious cheddar, move your horse and pony show over to the 140 character platform. Name your handle “Shitmyhusbandsays” and wait for a mediocre basic cable network to come screaming your name. It’s elementary, really. Here’s the schpeel: “Sleep talkin’ man [is about] my mind-mannered English husband Adam [who] lives a quite colorful existence in his dreams. Having benefited from hours of delight at his dead-of-night musings, I thought it only fair to share them with the world.” Some examples: “Now fuck off and let me bask in the glory of being me.” “I haven’t put on weight. Your eyes are fat.” “I’d rather peel off my skin and bathe my weeping raw flesh in a bath of vinegar than spend any time with you. But that’s just my opinion. Don’t take it personally.” “Lentils are evil. Pure fucking oozing evil. Take them away from me.” A bunch more from only the last couple of weeks are included below. A Singapore-based graphic design student who goes by the Vimeo handle of “Saggyarmpit,” has been making waves in the blogosphere with this impressive 48 sec. animated flip-book video called “Parkour Motion Reel.” She illustrated it frame by frame with a technical pen. Check it out, folks.[Courtesy of Hypebeast] |
