Here’s Belgium-based artist (painter, illustrator, caricaturist and photographer) Ben Heine explaining his series, “Pencil vs. Camera“:

Bernie Hou of Alien Loves Predator spent five months watching movies and three weeks drawing to create this cinematic cartography of Manhattan, complete with 91 film references.
Hou is giving away a free copy of the 18×24″ poster to the first person who sends him the names of all 91 movies. [Here’s a high-res version of the map with each movie numbered from 1-91.] He plans to release the full list of the films after May 11th. If that’s keeping you on the edge of your seat, you can purchase the poster for $16 here. [via Gothamist]
Inspired by turn of the century cigarette cards, Texas-based illustrator Chet Phillips has made three sets of animal-oriented trading cards for readers, writers, artists and aesthetes. Each set of 20 cards imagines a world of famous authors or artists as dog and cat personalities complete with “its own informative biography that includes some of their famous works with humorous cat and dog flavored book titles”. The sets come packaged in hand-crafted paper portfolios with library card styled enclosure and are available for just $10 a piece in Chet’s Etsy shop. The innovations run the gamut from getting your hair cut by robots to getting your booksmarts through a wood chipper. I’s thought that the vignettes were made to accompany food. The New Jersey Nets are imminently moving to Brooklyn, with their stadium being built just about ten blocks from Jailbreak headquarters. While we pride ourselves on being longtime Knicks fans, it’s damned exciting that a professional sports team will be just around the corner in two short years. Yahoo! reported that the team is considering changing their name to … the Brooklyn New Yorkers!? Ugh. We’re collectively more creative and inspired than that, right? Let’s hope Jay-Z and the Russian dude get their act together before making this official. In the meantime, Tauntr.com has “gotten its hands on” some mock-up art showing what the New Yorkers’ potential logo and mascot would look like. Yep, they’re predictably hipsterish, complete with ironic facial hair, cigarette, PBR can, v-neck T-shirt and black framed glasses. I don’t mind the font choices and color scheme, but connoting Brooklynites and Hipsters is almost as uninspired as following in the footsteps of the Houston Texans. What do you think? (Click to Make Bigger) Community is one of the best shows on TV, period. It’s also the only show so completely obsessed with and observant of our culture that while watching it I can’t help but feel giddy to be alive and participating in the zeitgeist at this moment in time. Illustrated by artist Chris Schweizer, this cartoon depicts Community’s “protagonist” Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) as Iron Man and his quirky cohorts as other members of “The Avengers.” On a micro level, Community revolves around the dysfunctional relationships between a study group at a community college. It’s full of hyper-meta pop culture (and self) references and often ventures into gag episodes, like this month’s stop-motion animated Christmas special. If you haven’t checked it out, do so immediately. I can’t recommend it enough. [Chris Schweizer via Slash Film] |
