25 Pop Culture-Inspired Art Cakes

1

(Above Photo Via fsumaria’s Flickr)

The 25 “art cakes” included in this post were chosen based on three criteria. The first, each cake had to be inspired, even tangentially, from something in popular culture — be it the Sorting Hat from Harry Potter or a zombie, representing the zeitgeist’s current infatuation with the human-flesh-eating terrors. The second was that each cake needed to be artistic, because while looking through hundreds upon hundreds of amateur and professional cakes, I noticed a theme: most of them aren’t very good! The last was that the photo of the cake had to be decent quality.

Keep in mind this gallery is subjective and probably missing some gems, so feel free to drop us a line if you find one that should be included.

Check out the rest of the collection after the jump.

McDonald’s Happy Meal Could Survive a Zombie Apocalypse

1

New York City-based photographer and artist Sally Davies bought a Happy Meal from McDonald’s some five months ago, left it out on her living room table, and promised to take a picture of it every day until the burger and fries noticeably changed in appearance. Sometime last week Davies’ art experiment reached day 137, and if you thought mold and other natural decomposition processes would have occurred, well, you’d be wrong.

After months, the burger and fries look pretty much the same as they did on day 1 (pictured above), which, among other things, is incredibly disgusting. Check out its lack of progress below.

Pop Anatomies… Now In 3D!!

0

I guess we all have to up our games in this new post-Avatar world.

A few weeks ago, we did a feature on Jason Freeny’s ridiculously cool pop culture anatomies. Apparently we were a day late and a dollar short because now he’s gone and posted these stunning, spinning 3D versions. Sure enough, they look even better in three dimensions than they did in two (especially that gummy bear up above who’s lookin’ mighty tasty right about now). There are five more after the jump.

If you like Jason’s work, you can keep up with him on his Facebook fan page. He’s also selling some interesting lenticular notebooks featuring his work.

Brutally Realistic Yoda Cake Takes a Turn Toward the Dark Side

0

It all started out so innocently. We thought this was just going to be a feel-good story about a sweet looking Yoda head cake and that would be that. Wrong we were. As we delved further and further into the slideshow it became apparent that this cake was little more than a cleverly disguised, one-way ticket to the Dark Side.

Go ahead and follow the link to see Yoda’s fate, but be warned… it ain’t pretty.
