I don’t know what to be more impressed by here: that Jeremy is forever immortalized in ham, provolone & seaweed or the skill and accuracy of the artist, Brooklyn-based bento and plush designer Anna The Red, who made this. It looks just like him! It’s incredible. This all came about after Jeremy was kind enough to answer some questions about the toy industry for Anna, who in turn wanted to thank him by adding something to the “props” page on his website, Jeremyriad.com. Head over to Anna’s blog to learn more about the creation of the meticulous “Coolest Guy I Never Met Yet,” as well as to see detail shots, commentary and learn what happened when she finished. (Spoiler alert: it wasn’t pretty for food Jeremy.) Popcorn Sofa = Packaging That Pops

Ogilvy design group in Brazil has created a most brilliant piece of product packaging: the Popcorn Sofa. When Magazine Luiza, the second largest department store in Brazil, wanted to promote a discount during Sofa Week, they turned to Ogilvy. The Popcorn Sofa is an everyday popcorn bag that transforms itself into a sofa when the corn is popped. Asks the agency: “Who doesn’t like to watch TV sitting on a comfortable sofa, eating popcorn?” As it turns out, a lot of people. Magazine Luiza sold 7,500 sofas that week, an increase of 17% over normal weeks, and people continue to come in asking for the popcorn. And…I’m suddenly starving. [via Ads of the World]
You know that feeling you get when you walk into someone’s house and see they’ve still got magnetic poetry on their fridge? It’s a composite of gentle pity mixed with fear they’re going to infect you with a virus sent from their aol account. I guess Chapman University (as part of the LA Times Festival of Books) thought the magnetic poetry idea could use an infusion of humanity. They invited festival-goers (a large number of whom were children, which is cool) to take a photo of themselves with their word of choice. The rest of us can log onto this website and create nonsensical (or, alternately, deeply philosophical) phrases using their pictures. It’s kind of an interesting study to see which words were chosen the most frequently, as well as which words were chosen at all. If you select “mustache,” from the drop-down menu, you’ll find two spellings of mustache and the word “taco”. If you choose “twinkle,” you’ll find a smiling young boy inadvertently covering up the “le” with his hand leaving just “twink” behind. Most of the submissions appear to be jumbles of words that would fail you out of grammar school, but perhaps cohesion isn’t the point. I’m looking forward to someone who has more time on his/her hands doing something very cool with all of this data. Here’s my best 5-minute effort: Go Red! is an interactive website where you can combine a set of character assets into a single customized giclee print.  It features art from 120 illustrators that, when mixed and matched like the spiral-bound flip books of our youth, can create 64,000 custom characters.  With innovative design by The Partners agency, you choose your desired head, body and pair of legs. Essentially, Go Red! positions you as both creator and curator of your own unique mashup. And did I mention it’s for a good cause? Payment via Paypal is woven right in. Hybrid creatures cost just £65. Very cool. Read the rest of this entry » MYKEA has come up with a solution to the love/hate relationship many people have with IKEA: Everybody’s got the same stuff. FEnter MYKEA with designer skins fabricated to fit popular IKEA products. The new company is still expanding their offerings, but my Dutch friends Loulou and Tummie have two designs available now. Click through to see some examples of MYKEA. You can also submit your own designs. Could be cool. Writes Alex:
Spoken like the hero he is. Download the print-ready version here and the hi-res version here. Lego customizer, Morgan19 is sure to have heard said of his/her work: “You must have too much time on your hands”. I’ve come to realize that sentiment, while certainly passive aggressive, is actually a very high compliment. It’s sort of akin to how in Victorian times, being pale was a sign of wealth that meant you didn’t have to work outside. People who call into question other peoples’ use of time are likely speaking from their own cubicle-induced frustration. I say: Morgan19, you keep making those Legos that look like Fidel Castro. They’re pretty awesome. Click through for some of our favorites. Many more via How to be a Retronaut. (The shoulder pad is an especially nice touch.) Any guesses about how much LEGO paid her to wear it? (via Incredible Things)
