How Neon Signs Are Made

0

Have you ever wondered how neon signs are made? I did, and Google brought me to this video, “How Neon Signs Are Made.”

The production quality isn’t stellar, but the information contained within satiates my curiosity about the process. It turns out it’s a much more complex undertaking than I imagined. Check it out.

Get Your Freak On With Freakers USA

1

Zach Klein is a freak. He knows it. I know it. And after you watch the absurd, brilliantly self-promotional video above, you too will know it. Fitting then that Klein is the creative brains behind Freakers USA, a Wilmington, North Carolina-based company that hand-makes one-size-fits-all bottle cooling sleeves. (The coolest ones I’ve ever seen.)

Freakers already surpassed its Kickstarter goal, but there are about two hours remaining to pledge and a bunch of great swag still up for grabs. I’m most interested in the $2,000 level: a grilled cheese party that Klein will throw for you and your friends from the back of his tricked-out boxcar.

How can you not love this guy?

Check out three more hilarious videos after the jump.

Designer Chicken Coops for Urban Farmers

3

The architects at New York’s RAAD have engineered a luxury urban chicken coop. Designed to maximize a hen’s productivity while ensuring optimal comfort, the Chicken Co-op is being marketed as a “new standard in living that liberates the lifestyles of modern chickens.”

With the exception of “sliding tray for easy clean up,” the Chicken Co-op’s amenities list would entice most humans:

  • Floor to ceiling windows
  • Plenty of storage
  • Complimentary dining area
  • Solar powered fan for keeping cool in the summer
  • 4 very spacious private units with great views

The cost of the Chicken Co-op is $3,500, but imagine how much you could save in eggs…

Urban farming is on the rise, and chickens are the gateway animal. Because chickens sit on the fence between livestock and pets, it’s legal to raise them in the backyards and terraces of most cities. For instance, Oakland city ordinances allow residents to keep chickens in an enclosed coop with some restrictions on how close it is to houses, schools and churches.

Many city-dwellers who raise chickens cite their main reason for doing so as having a deeper connection with the food they eat. Practically speaking, chickens provide poultry, eggs and fertilizer. RAAD’s Chicken Co-op is the urban designer’s alternative to chicken wire.

Popcorn Sofa = Packaging That Pops

1

Ogilvy design group in Brazil has created a most brilliant piece of product packaging: the Popcorn Sofa. When Magazine Luiza, the second largest department store in Brazil, wanted to promote a discount during Sofa Week, they turned to Ogilvy. The Popcorn Sofa is an everyday popcorn bag that transforms itself into a sofa when the corn is popped. Asks the agency: “Who doesn’t like to watch TV sitting on a comfortable sofa, eating popcorn?” As it turns out, a lot of people. Magazine Luiza sold 7,500 sofas that week, an increase of 17% over normal weeks, and people continue to come in asking for the popcorn. And…I’m suddenly starving.

Crowdsourcing Ramen Noodles

0

Nissin, the original creators of Cup Noodle ramen, are celebrating their 48th anniversary with a “Cup Noodle Election campaign“:

Over the last four decades, Nissin have continually put out some weird and wonderful flavor concoctions. Capturing trends of their times, no less than 73 different kinds have been released. Carton design and the flavors throughout the eras are emblematic of the popular culture of when they were produced; ranging from the straight up and serious packaging designs of the original cup ramen in 1970s or the Bianco bubble year designs harking back to the yuppy era, and right up to the more playful pizza margherita flavor of recent times.

Celebrating this (and in tune with local election season in Japan), the company launched their “Cup Noodle Election” site yesterday which lets users vote for their favorite discontinued flavor from the 73. Once the votes have been counted at the end of June the three most popular flavors will be resurrected from cup noodle oblivion and put back on the shelves. Cup noodle fans can actually vote up to three times a day for their chosen ramen delicacy.

That’s awesome! Cup Noodle is sold throughout the States, but damn if you can’t get flavors like Milk Seafood in your local grocery co-op. Unless your Japanese language skills are superior to Google Translator, you probably can’t participate in this important election. But you can make a great desktop wallpaper out of all the Cup Noodles, as I just did. [via Japan Trends]

Comedians as Superheroes

0

Comedians are real life superheroes because they make us laugh during the toughest of times. The Old Red Jalopy team fittingly gave superhero makeovers to Tina Fey, Steve Martin, Will Ferrell, Eddie Murphy and Bill Murray.

The pieces show 5 comedy icons as old style comic book heroes. They are published in their own comics, worn and faded as the best, well-used comics always are.

The images were created for Comedy Central’s US Comedy Awards. Click through for the rest of the comics.

Corner Store Bags by Cast of Vices

0

Making art out of everyday objects isn’t everybody’s bag (groan), but I tend to find it fascinating. Los Angeles-based company, Cast of Vices, is offering a luxury remix of common (free) New York City plastic grocery bags. Cast of Vice’s lambskin leather totes are hand sewn and hand embossed in LA, where perhaps they go over as something of an upscale novelty vs. NY’s WTF? In actuality, Paris is the place to grab these bags. Colette is offering three designs in two sizes starting at ~$250 USD here.
