Archive for October, 2011We’ve recently pointed at some collaborations we’re working on with artists like Mike Leavitt and Jason Freeny. We’re trying to keep the details of these somewhat under wraps for the time being, but we’re excited about what we have in the mix. Both are fantastic artists. Freeny, in particular, has a captivating blog and Facebook feed, through which anyone can observe his new projects’ development with nearly step-by-step specificity. It’s impressive what he’s able to do and to see how he gets his fans involved in providing commentary on his newest creations.  For instance, over the weekend, he was dissecting this Lego figure and reconstructing its innards.  Obviously, we’re electric in anticipation about what’s to come from these guys and will keep you posted of any new details here on our blog.
According to Gothamist.com and Brooklyn-based art collective, Faile’s Facebook page, Faile has a new piece going up on Houston Street
A friend of mine recently turned me on to AJ Fosik and his fantastical layered wooden creatures.  He’s also known for the art behind rock band Mastodon’s newest album cover. Here’s a video of Fosik displaying some of his pieces and describing his craft. His show premiered at the Jonathan Levine gallery in Chelsea last weekend. I’m excited to stop by and check it out when I get the chance.
My work has afforded me the opportunity to go visit China once or twice a year for the last couple of years, and to work side-by-side with the Chinese people who make our product ideas into reality. Even as a fairly well-traveled Westerner, China still manages to boggle my mind. Culturally, economically, and politically it’s just a very unique animal. This video does a remarkable job of taking this enormously complex nation and boiling it down into something adorable that will actually teach you a hell of a lot. And honestly, whoever you are, wherever you are, you need to start understanding more about China.
We’ve been excited about this debut for awhile.  As of  today, our tasty new Gummylamps are on sale at JailbreakCollective.com! Mmm…the soft glow of gummy. We’ve spent a whole year designing and engineering these to be just about as perfect as a night light could be. Check out all five flavors. We hope you like them. We’ll be offering some special discounts via Facebook and Twitter this week to celebrate the launch. Gummyporn:
And now a brief break from our regularly scheduled programming in order to give some love and props to our good friends, Ra Ra Riot, who kicked some ass on Jimmy Fallon last night. Our friend and soon-to-be-collaborator Mike Leavitt just wrapped up his excellent show, “Art Army Royalty,” at New York City’s Jonathan LeVine Gallery. To say it was a success would be a mild understatement, as Leavitt sold almost all of the 20-some original pieces he created for the occasion and received tons of press from the notoriously fickle and difficult-to-impress New York media community. One piece of noteworthy love was his placement atop New York Magazine’s infamous “Approval Matrix,” which each month designates different tangents of popular culture into four categories: despicable and highbrow, despicable and lowbrow, brilliant and highbrow and brilliant and lowbrow. (The second-to-last — top right — houses Mike and his Chuck Close action figure.) Congrats, Mike. I’m vicariously checking off appearing on the Approval Matrix from my bucket list. Wait, is that allowed? |
