Archive for September, 2010Before our last post on him has even had the chance to move from the front page, artist Jason Freeny is back another stunning anatomical construction: Mario. An homage to the classic video game character’s 25th “birthday” (which he celebrated just last week), Freeny’s newest creation will be on display at New York Comic-Con in October. Mario’s creation process is detailed pretty thoroughly on Freeny’s Facebook page. Making fun of hipsters is almost as tired and played-out as the hipster trend itself. Nevertheless, I’ve got to give it up to the always-clever folks over at College Humor, who have drawn seven superheroes doing and wearing only the most ironic, hipsterish things in a series of hilarious illustrations. After the jump see Professor Xavier in his “fixy” wheelchair; the Hulk expressing his adoration for American Apparel; Batman as a mustachioed, skinny-jean wearing Tweeter; Iron Man, bespectacled and fedora topped; Wonder Woman as a Subaru driver; and Aquaman, dirty and nostalgic for Portland. Above, Spidey skips around, “trying to focus” on his photography. (Although it’s not mentioned, he’s obviously in Williamsburg.) Steve Bialik’s “Samurai Wars”

“The Anatomy of Technology” is a series of digital illustrations by Denmark-based artist Mads Peitersen. After the jump check out the insides of five other technological devices, including a toaster, a turntable and two game-console controllers. Ron Jan‘s Iron Spam action figure parody is one of oddest mashups we’ve ever had the pleasure of sharing on The Jailbreak. The faceplate, arms and legs were molded with super sculpey and then attached to a spam can adorned with a custom label. Check out Ron’s Iron Zombie after the break. (Photo: Diamond Series: The Hulk [2008]; Mixed Media on Canvas; 57″ x 46″) With his two most impressive series, Making Gods and New Buddha, Tibet-born, New York-based artist Gade combines forms and elements of traditional Tibetan painting with images of American pop culture icons. Here’s a quote from Gade about his work: “Cultural icons such as Mickey Mouse, McDonald’s and Mao are actually a reflection of the current cultural state of Tibet affected by the Cultural Revolution and globalization. From my experience, there is no longer a single, homogeneous culture in Tibet. Rather, it is hybrid and diverse. I am interested in the state of people who are living in this ever-changing society.” After the jump check out Tibetan-style paintings featuring Mickey Mouse, Spiderman, Ronald McDonald, Batman and others. [Spotted on Geek Art] Pick one up from Threadless [$40.00]. (Above Photo Via fsumaria’s Flickr) The 25 “art cakes” included in this post were chosen based on three criteria. The first, each cake had to be inspired, even tangentially, from something in popular culture — be it the Sorting Hat from Harry Potter or a zombie, representing the zeitgeist’s current infatuation with the human-flesh-eating terrors. The second was that each cake needed to be artistic, because while looking through hundreds upon hundreds of amateur and professional cakes, I noticed a theme: most of them aren’t very good! The last was that the photo of the cake had to be decent quality. Keep in mind this gallery is subjective and probably missing some gems, so feel free to drop us a line if you find one that should be included. Check out the rest of the collection after the jump. Having covered his pop anatomies multiple times previously, it’s safe to say we’re huge fans of New York City-based artist Jason Freeny. His latest creation is this 4″ vinyl internal anatomy sculpture of the titular character from Finding Nemo, which he’ll be auctioning off on eBay this coming Wednesday (September 13). Thanks to our good friend Jeremy Brautman over on Neon Monster, we now know that Freeny’s last auction fetched him over $1,000 for his dissected Icebat Uglydoll, meaning deep pockets will be definitely be necessary to snatch up Nemo. Freeny has also given the same treatment to the Toy Story alien, which you can see after the jump. By A Brand Called Ed. Available through Officeworks [$5.00]. |
