Archive for August, 2010One of our endeavors here at the Jailbreak is to bring the best of the designer toy movement to our audience (or vice versa). Unbeknowst to many, there is a huge and tremendously popular scene out there centered around art toys (aka: designer toys or Urban Vinyl). At our days jobs with the Jailbreak Collective, we dabble in this scene though we’re not really a full-fledged part of it. We do, however, strongly stand behind the idea of the “product” as one of the most meaningful and vital pop-art mediums of the moment. So, for the uninitiated, meet Bearbrick by Medicom. It’s one of the two granddaddies of the whole designer toy genre. (The other being Dunny, who we covered just a few days ago.) These toys, which are used as platforms to design on, have seen hundreds, if not thousands, of variants, ranging from standard pop culture icons, like Darth Vader and Spiderman, to totally obscure characters created by random artists. The pic above is just the latest and greatest from Bearbrick – a cross-pollination with Uglydoll. It’s safe to say that Uglydoll has become a designer toy icon in its own right, by the way. So this is a pretty nice little mashup. We’ll be trying to keep our readers current on new editions of these figures as they arrive because, well, they’re cool and you should know about them. A pretty adorable pop-culture mashup by artist James Hance. There are a bunch more illustrations from this series after the jump. [spotted at Buzzfeed] “Diamond Lights” by product designer Eric Therner, who aptly describes his creation as “functional sculpture.” Pick one up for around $35.00. [Spotted at Might and Wonder] These badass popsicles are the brainchild (children?) of German artists Florian Jenett and Valentin Beinroth. The guns are made of flavored ice (cherry, cola, and licorice to be exact). [found at Today and Tomorrow]
Star Wars Yoga: An ingenious combination of two seemingly disparate cultural phenomenons by writer and designer Matthew Latkewicz. Check out TIE Fighter Advanced, Saber One, AT-AT, Half I Am Your Father and more after the jump.
They’re on sale already at Kidrobot. There are launch parties going on tonight, literally all over the world. Here’s a map showing you which one’s are the closest to your particular neck of the woods. A little caveat for you though; Kidrobot parties can often mean lots and lots of waiting on line. So pack some roadies. In light of recent events in the world of online memes, I really think it’s time for us to revisit the double rainbow at Burning Man in 08. As you can see above, it was a beauty. But oddly, as you can see below, in spite of having roughly 50,000 famously open-minded, enthusiastic people on hand (with a known penchant for hallucinogenics, to boot) the response was relatively muted and dispassionate in comparison to the ecstatic mania that we now know a double rainbow to be capable of producing. In retrospect, one might have reasonably expected that the largest orgy in history would have spontaneously occurred at this moment. Ah well… Just some food for thought on this lovely Friday. Most likely, this will prove to be just a pipe dream but, if not, the new capital of Southern Sudan will be built according to the plan above, in the shape of  an ridiculously gigantic rhinoceros.  According the The Independent, the plan would cost about 10.4 billion dollars (in trendier – and more surreal- terms, that’s just 4.5% of the total market value of Apple) and take 20 years to execute. And then, if all goes well, there are also plans to turn Southern Sudan’s second city will be shaped like a giraffe. [spotted on Newser]
These bullet train chopsticks are the second coolest Asian-food-eating utensils I’ve ever seen. The first is here. Pick up a set from Japanese retailer JBOX for 8 bucks. |
