December 11 — Phillips de Pury & Company’s ‘New York New York’ Art Auction

Thus far, our digital advent calendar has been comprised of mostly hand-made and inexpensive gift ideas. This morning we’re covering the other end of the price spectrum, but staying consistent with our overarching New York City theme. That’s because tomorrow (Dec. 12), Phillips de Pury & Company is having an auction titled, “New York New York,” which includes over 350 pieces that “look at the dynamic contemporary culture of New York and the impact it has had on artists [from] around the world.”

The collection is encompassed by four categories: Contemporary Art, Editions, Photography and Design, and includes work from folks like Warhol, Basquiat, Robert Rauschenberg, Swoon, Sol Lewit and more. Here’s a peep of some of our favorite offerings from the event.

December 8 — Riley Noehren’s Vision of New York City

Today we’ve got a set of four unique prints by Los Angeles-based artist, writer and lawyer, Riley Noehren. Each photograph turned hand-pulled screen print depicts a well-known New York City destination (above, Brooklyn Bridge).

By purchasing one of the prints, you’ll be getting one of only five ever made. They range in price from about $26.00 to $42.00. Check them out below.

December 7 — NYC is a Clothing Brand – 25 Big Apple-Inspired T-Shirts

Since its design in 1977 by New York Magazine co-founder, Milton Glaser, the “I New York” image has become one of the most widely-circulated and oft-imitated staples of  American pop culture. It’s ubiquity borders on obnoxious, and New Yorkers would probably sooner eat garbage than wear one themselves. Ergo, that leaves millions of tourists as the sole purchaser of the most recognizable souvenir in history.

Regardless of how the image is perceived, however, it has undeniably paved the way for other NYC-themed T-shirts. So, we’ve included 25 of the freshest tees on the market in the latest addition to our 25 days of Christmas series. The only stipulation, besides general nice design, is that they’re emblazoned with some aspect–be it Jerry Seinfeld, The Statue of Liberty or the Brooklyn Bridge–of the Empire State. There’s a little something for everyone. Happy shopping…

We’re deviating a bit from our promise of including only handmade gift ideas to share this Manhattan-map dish by notNeutral. At fifty bucks a pop, the plate is one in a series of 12 city-map dishes that also include versions of Rome, London, Los Angeles and Montreal. They’re available to purchase individually and also in sets of four (Manhattan comes with St. Petersburg, Brasilia and Melbourne).

December 5 — ElectricCo’s Antique Brooklyn Prints

Anybody shopping on this Saturday morning? Hope so, because we’ve got a really nice set of posters to share in the latest entree to our digital advent calender. Jesus, I feel like one those of waif-hair sporting, expensive-looking-but-actually-shitty-suit wearing dudes hawking kitsch on QVC.  Is QVC even still around? Isn’t it the Home Shopping Network now? Anyway, I digress.

ElectricCo is the company–two good guys from Brooklyn; college buds, Brett and Dave–responsible for this limited edition, Brooklyn-themed print (shown above). They’ve got five in total, but we’re only featuring three. And I implore whomever buys these to do so as a set. These babies would look awesome hanging on a wall next to one another.

Brett and Dave say they have about 20 (out of a printed 25 or 30) of each left. The prints are hand screenprinted, individually stamped and numbered, and measure 13″ x 16.”

$25.00/eachLink to ElectricCo’s Etsy Shop — Here are the individual links for the prints in the order they appear here: First, Second and Third.

Make sure to check out the previous entries in The Jailbreak’s 25 Days of a New York City Christmas: December 1 & December 2 & December 3 & December 4

I’m hard-pressed to find anything I don’t love about these prints. Minimalism and collage are two traits that will always be greatly appreciated by the right side of my brain. And then add clean type, maps, strong pastels and antique seals (crests? stamps?) into the mix, and you’ve created a complete gem.

December 4 — Fall in NYC Prints by Matte Stephens

Fall is hands down the best season to live in New York City (with apologies, and a runner’s up cookie to Spring). But as it ends, and winter rears it’s frosty face, there’s little to remind us of a time passed. Well, now you can live vicariously through these fall-colored (and themed) prints of paintings by Portland, Oregon-based artist, Matte Stephens. There’s something very youthful and inviting about Stephens’ work, like it could as easily hang in your kid’s bedroom (I don’t have a kid, so maybe you wouldn’t put this in her room; I have no idea) as in the living room. Central Park (shown above) is limited to an edition of 100 signed and numbered copies. It measures 13″ x 19,” and is available to purchase here for $60.00.

December 3NYC Airport Code Journals by Jet Set Paper

Today’s NYC-themed gift is perfect for the writer and/or jet-setter in the family. And luckily for you, those two traits belong–more often than not–to a similar type of person. Inspired by the art of travel, Pittsburgh-based design studio, Jet Set Paper, takes classic Moleskine notebooks and stamps them with airport codes from major cities around the world. The journals range from Tokyo’s Narito International to Paris’s Charles de Gaulle to New York City’s JFK (pictured) and LaGuardia international airports. They also produce area-code stationary, which could prove handy when needing to surprise mom and dad with an unannounced move to the Big Apple.

Each journal is a standard, 64 lined-page Moleskine Cahier, hand-printed with the airport codes. They cost $8.50 apiece, and come with four area-code stationary notes. A link to purchase can be found below.

The stationary is gocco-printed and features a telephone image above vintage telegraph numbers. A set of six costs $7.50. Purchasing info below.

December 2NYC Food Cart Prints by Sean Finocchio

“The Hotdog Cart” — $25.00, here.

Welcome to day two of our inaugural Digital Advent Calender a.k.a. The Jailbreak’s 25 Days of a New York City Christmas. If you’re just tuning in, here’s how it works: Each morning (or mid-afternoon, depending on the alcohol intake from the previous evening) from now until Christmas, we’ll be revealing a handmade, NYC-themed gift idea to fulfill your holiday needs. Yesterday, we featured John Golden’s City Blocks. Today, allow us to present Los Angeles-based artist, Sean Finocchio’s, wonderful series of NYC Food Cart Prints.

There’s hardly anything more synonymous with the streets of New York City than the over-population of its various food carts. The smells that waft through the air and the food mongers who hawk nuts and hot dogs have become a part of our daily routines. We’re mostly desensitized, sure. But their omnipotence is undeniable.

Finocchio’s series of limited edition prints include, kebab, pretzel, gyro, hot dog and nut cart versions. Each was printed in an edition of 100 on 12.5″ x 12.5″ archival paper. One costs $25.00, but all five are offered for the discounted price of $100.00.

Buy here from The Supermarket.

December 1John W. Golden’s Five Boroughs City Blocks

It’s December 1st, and officially the beginning of the 2009 holiday season. During my childhood, it was always around today that mom hooked me up with one of those stale-chocolate-candy-filled advent calenders. Since we live in an online world, it would be impossible to send each of you an advent calender, so I figured a digital collection of daily gift ideas would have to suffice. Each item over the next 25 days will be New York City-themed (and handmade if possible). Why? Because there’s no other city in the world as magical during the holidays as the one we call home.

First up are these Five Borough City Blocks designed by illustrator and photographer, John W. Golden. Learn more after the break.

Each hardwood block (Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, The Bronx and Staten Island) measures 7/8″ wide by 3″ tall by 1/2″ deep. When stacked horizontally, the 5 blocks measure 3″ tall by 4 1/4″ tall.

These are a one-of-a-kind gift, and cost $18.00. Purchase them quickly, here.

If you have a NYC-themed product that you would like to be featured in The Jailbreak’s 25 Days of a NYC Christmas, send an e-mail with photos, description and where to purchase info to quincy@jailbreaktoys.com.

[Ed. Note: We're not trying to alienate anybody who celebrates other holidays. In fact, we're Jewish and unsure of what we celebrate. "The Jailbreak's 25 Days of a NYC Holiday Season" just didn't seem catchy enough.]
