UK artist, Paul Baines, is perhaps best known (at least to us) for his ‘Black Christ’ piece, which casually depicts President Obama as Jesus Christ. His work is always drenched in intelligent social commentary while remaining on-point artistically. Enough from me on this. Here’s a quote from Baines about one of his more recent works, “Outta Space.”

“The planet is full, people are everywhere, there’s no room to breathe, no food to eat, we’re ‘out of space’, yet we keep on doing what our instincts tell us. We breed.”

“If everyone on this planet spawns, and their progeny do the same, the planet will die. We will eat, burn, and exhaust every natural resource until nothing is left. Perhaps we don’t have a choice. Then again many have managed to allay other primal instincts such as the instinct to kill, then again many haven’t. There are times and places to kill, sanctioned by law, and sometimes those who do ‘follow the rules’ are hailed by the state as heroes. The same goes for breeding. If people stop breeding the economy stops growing, breeders are heroes of the state, of capitalism. But what if they stopped, would that be such a bad thing after all?

Do we need to keep expanding? Shouldn’t those who choose to save the planet’s resources be commended rather than those who fill the Earth with yet more of the same, humans, upright walking apes with little more understanding of our ecology than they did say, millions of years ago? History shows us our mistakes. Take the Mayans for example, they wiped themselves out, some might like to attribute it to a mystical event, but most likely it’s a case of over population. If there’s not enough food, water and other basic resources, people will die.”

“So what’s the alternative? Well Sci-fi writers have imagined the scenario right across the scenario. There’s always Soylent Green, which in essence means we will become cannibals when all plants and fish are finally decimated. Alternatively a few of us might planet hop, if we used every technical and scientific resource on the planet, fingers crossed at least a dozen of us could leave here in a deep freeze and wait for someone, something, somewhere to pick them up for prosperity. Then again there may not be any viable alternative. We’re slow, dumb, ape-like creatures, and we like to screw. We like to spawn. Even if it kills us all.”
