Archive for November, 2009Russia is a huge, rotting, maggot-filled imperialist bear in freelance artist Keith Thompson‘s caricature map that depicts European power divisions in 1914. The insanely-detailed drawing (click for expanded version) was created for a book called Leviathon by Scott Westerfeld, and is also available to purchase as a print (here). [Via Kottke]
Everybody has days when so much shit knowledge is floating around inside that massive modestly-sized brain of ours it seemingly might explode. Is it due to a lack of understanding? Or simply information overload? Well, the folks from Super Mundane (awesome name for a company) believe it’s the former, and so they’ve created this print to share their lament. Measures at 5″ x 17,” perfect for the fridge. If only we had some cool magnets to hold it up with… $46.00, here. This is the new video for “Heaven Can Wait” by Charlotte Gainsbourg featuring Beck. It’s the second single off her upcoming album IRM, also produced by Beck, which will be released in January 2010. Directed by Keith Schofield.
For a month, starting in mid-August and ending September 15th, Wired writer Evan Ratliff tried to disappear. The ultimate question was: is it possible to completely vanish in the digital age? The result was the most intricate game of hide and seek in seek in history. Ratliff and Wired put up a $5,000 bounty for anyone who could find him, take his photo, and tell him the word “fluke.” The article is one of the most revealing studies about our society in the internet generation. If you wanted to drop off the grid what would you have to do? Read the article to find out just how difficult it is.
Italian street artist, Blu, designed a series of original prints called “Demos” that come in an edition of 25 (11/25 shown above) and are available to purchase through Studio Cromie. Each one is slightly different as they were made by adding random colors during the screen-printing process. The prints measure 27″ x 39″ and cost a modest $800.00 considering how talented and well-renowned Blu is as an artist. Click here for more info. Check out 10/25 and 8/25 after the break. Just released yesterday music video for “Cousins” by Brooklyn band, Vampire Weekend. It’s the first single off their upcoming album “Contra,” which is set to hit stores in the U.S. on January 12th, 2010. Video directed by Garth Jennings (one half of directing duo, Hammer and Tongs). Notice the geometric tape throughout? It looks very much like the work of Aakash Nihalani…
From Make comes this series of origami money hats that were created by–at least at the moment–an unknown person. Each currency is folded into a cap–some matching the country’s style and others just for fun. Thanks to a link in the comments on the Make story I was able to find a bunch more, which are included after the break. Click here for a site called Fickle Flickers that has about 100 of them. [Via Make] 21-year-old Sydney, Australia-born and -based musician, Jonathan Boulet, will release his self-titled debut album on December 4th through Modular Recordings. This is the brand-new video for his first single, A Community Service Announcement. Directed by New Zealand-based duo, Special Problems. Artist’s Myspace. [Via]
Illustrator and famed children’s book writer, Christoph Niemann, brings us “Bio-Diversity,” a series of leafs that he’s either found or shaped into states, Star Wars characters (pictured above), T-shirts and other clever creations. Each one has a pithy-tree or -leaf title like, “alder ego” and “poplar vs. unpoplar” (shown below). [Flavorwire via Abstract City Blog] A friend sent me an e-mail this morning, and attached was this hilarious parody video (‘Spend Hard’) directed by his production company, Everyday Wonders. It spoofs those found-faces American Express commercials that gained some momentum in the blogosphere a while back. Juvenile, sure. But hilarious nonetheless. Phallic-shaped things will never cease to be funny. |
