Inspired by the ‘gritty’ nature and sleek design of the place they call home, Brooklyn-based company, Wrecords by Monkey, takes discarded and recycled old records and turns them into fashionable jewelry and home decorations.
Their latest collection, “Off The Trainâ€, includes items like the cityscape armbands (above), chairs, mirror frames, clocks, and flashy ‘Brooklyn’ necklaces that might be a hard sell to people who actually live here.
Most designs are carved or drawn into the records, and show iconic symbols of a New York City lifestyle: rats on the subway, pigeons, the Brooklyn Bridge, the big apple, the Manhattan skyline, and taxis.
I had the pleasure of running into Monkey–yes, he’s a person–at a flea market in Fort Greene this past weekend, and his eccentric, high-on-life personality seems to duplicate itself in his work.
Most products run between $15.00 (the armbands) and $165.00 (the cityscape chair, complete with record seat), and are available though his website.
