Win a Free Toy Tokyo Variant Obama Action Figure

0

ob000tt-2

The Summer Suit Obama Action Figure was limited to 400 pieces and sold out almost instantly upon its release at last year’s SD ComiCon. Created as an exclusive for Toy Tokyo, this special edition fetches up to $350 on ebay, and can still be purchased via Wizard Universe for a penny less. If you’re unable to fork out such a massive sum of money you’ll get your chance to win one at Wizard World this weekend.

Starting Friday, J*Rock will be posted up at his booth taking e-mail addresses for a raffle that will finish on Sunday. If you’re still around at the end of the weekend you can pick it up on the spot, and if not we’ll send it to you in the mail!

Yet another reason to get in your car and drive to Philadelphia this weekend.

McCain Action Figures Update

Yesterday I wrote that people attending the Wizard World Philly Convention this weekend could expect to receive a free John McCain Action Figure from Jailbreak Toys. I lied. Sort of. As it turns out J*Rock will be selling these beauties for $1 to republicans and toy collectors alike. But not to worry, we’ve devised a loophole by which readers of the jailbreak can still get one au gratis.

Simply go up to J*Rock and mutter, or yell, the words “Quincy sent me” and he’ll be happy to oblige your faithful readership with a free toy.

Enjoy the convention!

To-Scale Gundam Robot Materializes in Tokyo

The Japanese answer to fighting Godzilla was built at Shiokaze Park in Odaiba, Tokyo in the form of a 1/1 scale Gundam Robot. Not only does the big guy turn his head, he lights up into a flurry of magnificent colors at night. The statue was built to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the first Mobile Suit Gundam anime television program.

Head over to toysrevil for a detailed look at the construction and completion process; or check out the Gundam official site.

The launch of the statue will take place on July 11th and run through the end of August.

Here are some pictures.

Wizard World Daily Update

From now until Friday we’ll be running an update each day featuring various specials, give-a-ways, and other goodies that will be taking place at the Wizard World Convention in Philadelphia. Just as a reminder, the exhibition begins on June 19th (Friday) and runs through the end of the weekend.

Jailbreak Toys’ founder J*Rock will be in attendance, signing autographs and fielding questions at his very own booth (#900).

Those of you planning on making the trip to Philly can expect a free John McCain Action Figure courtesy of Jailbreak Toys. Since the man who lost to Obama has dropped mightily in terms of social and political significance, we have a massive stock pile of unwanted toys in the likeness of Senator McCain. 1,000 of them will be given away over the three day event!

Here are a couple of ideas for using the toy once you’ve left the convention…

1. Tie a string around his neck and make him a Christmas tree ornament

2. Film a John McCain sex tape

3. Take him out to dinner and a movie

4. Wrap him in catnip and feed him to Fluffy

5. Somehow convince J*Rock to let you have ten of them; subsequently tie them to the back of your car in lieu of those loud and obnoxious cans people use when they’ve just gotten married

6. Keep him and hope its value will increase tenfold after the 2012 election

7. Give him to your boss for his birthday

8. Tie five of those toy parachutes to his neck and toss him off the Brooklyn Bridge

Swoon

Upper Playground’s WalrusTV recently scored an exclusive interview (below) with New York-based street artist Swoon, and it’s definitely worth checking out. This is the first time we’ve been introduced to the lovely and wildly talented artist–who attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn–which seems strange since she should, and eventually will, be considered one of the most prominent contemporary street artists of her generation.

It may seem like this is high praise for a relative unknown (at least to us) but this girl has crazy skills in more than one medium. She finds her inspiration from her daily experiences (all the good ones do) and seems to have a knack for capturing the condition of her contemporaries. Swoon takes ordinary faces, alters them, and makes them remarkable. The concrete is her canvas of choice.

Swoon has been featured at Art Basel Miami, the MOMA in New York, the Deitch Studios, as well as the Brooklyn Museum.

Look for her work on a street corner near you!

Enjoy the interview!

Arkitip Magazine may be one of the best publications you’ve never read. Over the past ten years they’ve changed the way people perceive art magazines with their unique cardboard covers and constantly evolving aesthetic. Now for their 51st edition, they’ve teamed with Shepard Fairey and Alife to present a special issue, which will be released on June 19th in conjunction with an installation in Los Angeles.

If you purchase the mag in advance ($70), you’ll also receive this t-shirt (above) with the ubiquitous Andre the Giant image on the front.

The opening reception for the show (runs from June 19-July 12) will take place at the California location of Alife from 7-10 p.m. this Friday.

Below is an amazing video of Fairey’s precise and unconventional artistic process.

Artist Valerie Leonard’s Vision of the American Flag

Known for her eccentric portraits of animals, artist Valerie Leonard’s American Flag was constructed with hundreds of toy soldiers spray painted in red, white and blue. But it’s really the second, black and white version that pops and shows her creativity and skill.

New mediums are always interesting to explore, especially when they include toys in their foundation. These are great pieces that suggest maybe Leonard should stick to toys and not pets in Warhol-esque techno color.
