Quote from Artist: “It’s a strange position for a lot of us these days. We come from graffiti and street art but now we want to move beyond that. That’s why I like the term post-graffiti a lot. It sounds pretentious but it’s the label that I find most accurate really. I used to do graffiti. Now I paint. But I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing now if I hadn’t painted on the streets. Simple.”

Eighties Babies Garments

At the intersection of art and fashion you’ll find these new summer garments from clothing brand Eighties Babies. Deriving their name from the decade in which the owners were born, the Boulder, CO/Boston, MA company was founded in 2008 with the mission to provide fashionable, trend-setting clothing to the masses.

The fashion industry, much like it’s sister, the art world, is a fickle and sometimes impenetrable force field of varying tastes and loud critics. To be involved in either is to have a vision so passionate that not sharing it with anyone and everyone would be a crime.

These guys are good friends and faithful readers of the jailbreak so go out and support a grass-roots movement with grand aspirations.

Their summer 2009 collection is composed of five designs that each come at the low, recession-proof price of $20. Click here it make a purchase.

Animate the Day: Red Rabbit by Egmont Mayer

“A man lives alone in a small apartment. The little contact he had with other people has dropped to zero since the rabbit appeared. Every attempt to get the rabbit out of his apartment has failed and since he is not sure whether or not pets are allowed in the building, he does not let anybody enter his apartment.”

iartistlondon is riding the coat tails of the DIY revolution with their line of products that allow customers to mimic and/or recreate the work of famous modern artists. Their first project revolved around Damien Hirst, and now, riding his own wave of commercial success, Banksy and his stencils mark the second release from the company.

Here’s what they had to say…

“iartistlondon brings you the ultimate experience in street art. Now you can create your own Banksy graffiti for just ÂŁ9.99 thanks to our IBANKSY boxes and machines located in the key areas of London. Each box contains one spray can and an A4 stencil with one of the famous Banksy designs. Choose between one of our 6 designs and collect them all. The stencils are totally reusable. Don´t be satisfied with just a picture of his graffiti, make your own cool stuff.”

This is a pretty cool idea but it entirely defies the point of being an artist. Why waste your creativity on trying to make something that’s already been done before?

Chewing in Venice was a public exhibition that took place in the streets of the famous Italian city a few weeks ago. Using only bubble gum, artist Simone Decker created something truly original, and probably injured his jaw in the process.

During a recent visit to Chicago, the Jailbreak was able to see some amazing Picasso pieces in the new contemporary wing of the Art Institute of Chicago. So he’s on our mind. These new photos courtesy of LIFE Magazine show the man doing some interesting work with light as his medium. You can find more photos of this expose here.

A quote from the website…

“LIFE photographer Gjon Mili visited Picasso in 1949. Mili showed the artist some of his photographs of ice skaters with tiny lights affixed to their skates jumping in the dark—and Picasso’s mind began to race. The series of photographs that follows—Picasso’s light drawings—were made with a small flashlight in a dark room; the images vanished almost as soon as they were created.”
