Immigration Reform x Shepard Fairey

It looks like Shepard Fairey has found his next cause, and it’s a good one. In a joint collaboration between Fairey and Ernesto Yerena, the Immigration Reform posters were created to promote that exact cause. The idea is that immigrant or not, everyone deserves to be treated like a human being. All I can say to that is amen, brother. All proceeds from the sale of these posters will go toward creating materials for the May Day marches and various immigration reform organizations. This is a cause that is seriously worthwhile and I think everyone should go out and buy one of these prints. You can buy the one with the image of the girl here, and the one with the man here. Both are $45 and available at obey.com and cimarrones.org. Here’s a quote from Shepard about what this project means to him.

“I am an immigrant. My ancestors left England and Scotland to come to this land to create a better life for themselves and their families. America is a land of immigrants. Ironically, the people’s who this land was inhabited by before ā€œAmericansā€ were Native Americans North and South American descent. I bring up this history not to stir up controversy or animosity, but to simply point out the complexity of who is entitled to live here. Something that is not complex and should not be controversial is the right of all humans to be treated like humans. People coming to America for the same reasons our ancestors did deserve human rights. The United States was created by immigrants and now our country needs immigration reform.”

Star Trek Toys

Star Trek was one of the first movies I saw in theaters as a kid so I have to say I’m pretty stoked for JJ Abrams reboot, which comes out Friday, May 8th. With the release of the film rapidly approaching it seems appropriate to discuss these new Star Trek toys created by Funko Toys. While they’re the Shatner and Nimoy versions from the original film, I think still they’re pretty neat and realistic. They would look nice sitting next to our Oddfellows Collection on your desk, too.

Check out the more caricaturized versions, which have yet to be released, along with the new trailer for Star Trek 2009 after the jump.

Discuss: Would you buy one of these toys?

The good folks over at Super Touch Art just did an excellent first look/expose on “Requiem”, Damien Hirst’s career retrospective exhibition in Kiev, Ukraine. It’s taking place at the Pinchuk Art Center and includes over 100 pieces that Mr. Hirst has completed during his illustrious career. Head over there for more information. A few more photos after the jump.

Real Live Toys!

1

This is one of several video pieces from artist Keith Loutit’s vimeo page. I don’t want to give away his trade secrets because I personally prefer to believe that he just brought thousands of little toys to life and captured the whole thing on film (but if you’re curious, he does explain his process a bit on the Vimeo page).

By the way, the song in this video is pretty amazing all by itself.Ā  So, in case you’re wondering, it’s called “Clementine”, by Megan Washington. She’s an Aussie and if there’s any justice in the world, you’ll be hearing more about her soon ’cause she’s obviously got a special talent and plenty of heart.

The White House just released this pretty fantastic expedition though Barack Obama’s first 100 days as president via 292 photos taken by photographer Pete Souza. They call it “Delivering on Change,” and while the name is kind of blah, I don’t expect much creativity from the White House brass. You can find a few more of my favorites after the jump.Ā  To view this thing in its entirety head to their Flickr page.

Check out this Harley Davidson bike and helmet designed by Damien Hirst. He’s worked with some famous companies recently, such as Levi’s, but this has to be his coolest collaboration to date. If you would ride a Harley, would you ride a Harley designed by Hirst?

It’s that time of the week again. This time around Shepard is selling the poster he created for Paul McCartney’s “Change Begins” benefit concert, which took place on April 4 and included Ringo Starr, Sheryl Crow, Eddie Vedder, Ben Harper and even Mr. McCartney himself. You know the deal with getting prints from Obey. It goes on sale Tuesday (4/28) so pick one up if you can.

Miles Aldridge is a photographer from the UK who has worked for everyone from GQ to Vanity Fair and the New Yorker. I’ve shied away from doing photography posts, although I think it’s one of the more natural art forms. Aldridge’s work is sexually suggestive, subliminal and sensational but worth taking a look at. This should serve as a prelude to my interview with Brooklyn photog Martin Diegelman, which should be up some time later this week. In the meantime, enjoy one of the most provocative photographers out there. For more information on Aldridge check out his website.
