Zombama Brains T-Shirt

This is social commentary at its absolute finest. Designer Jared Moratis created this as, “a commentary about rabid Obama fan-mania coupled with his missteps as a new leader, as well as a commentary about appropriation art.” The piece is entirely hand drawn and then rendered abstract with the use of Illustrator. You can pick one up for $9 on teefury.com for the next 24 hours. Also available is a wicked print version of the piece in a slightly more morbid color scheme. Here’s a quote from the author and a picture of the print version. Enjoy!

“I wanted to do an Obama piece (along with everybody else on the planet, evidently), but since my brain has been irreparably warped by cartoons and pop-culture nonsense I simply could not realize this intent with any level of serious meaning or maturity. I was looking at some of the parody images out there, several of which were based on the popular Shepard Fairey piece†… “Most (if not all) of the parodies I came across were a bit obvious, choosing to rely on simply basing their ideas on words that rhymed with “hopeâ€. I wanted to run in the opposite direction, so I chose to parody the parodies (as well as Fairey’s reputation for using appropriated images in his art) by turning Obama into a zombie at the risk of coming across as an Obama-hater and attracting the attention of the FBI. Also, zombies are teetering on the edge of being overexposed in pop-culture (if they haven’t already tumbled mindlessly over the edge of that pop-culture precipice). The slogan was easy, cuz what other slogan would a zombie choose for his campaign? Also “BRAINS†does not in any way rhyme with “HOPEâ€, yet it somehow totally does. Think about it…â€

Toy Wars: Iron Man vs. Bruce Lee

YouTube Preview Image

This is a sweet video of Bruce Lee and Iron Man fighting as toys. I think the creators of this need to do one with the Obama Action Figure fighting the recession, or Iran, or something else entirely…

*Update: This was created by former comicbook writer turned moviemaker, Patrick Boivin. This short is very well done and I’ll be posting more from him in the near future (meaning when I’m not in class and am able to listen to the audio…)

The good folks over at Moody DIY designer toys (Bovinyl in particular) created this unique platform, utilizing the Obama Action Figure. The custom piece is titled “I.W.G. is in da house” and will be featured at the “Humans Beware” show at Rocketworld in San Francisco, which will be running from April 10, 2009-June 6, 2009.

“The immediate goal for the I.W.G. (Insurgents Wilderness Gruppo) was to resist human destruction and domination of their ‘natural’ habitat. They accomplish this through a variety of means, including the use of weaponry and combat. With the emergence of Barack Obama, the I.W.G. sought out the new President in an attempt to create change through political means. The headline in the San Francisco Chronicle reads “Obama Appoints I.W.G. to U.S. Fish and Wildlifeâ€. The insurgents hope to stop the destructive human ways from inside ‘da House’.”

To Make Art Out of…

This is an image created by an artist simply known as Iri5, who is a freelance painter and sculptor out of England. This particular photo is President Obama‘s face made out of pictures from his historic rise to the presidency. According to her Flickr page, Iri5 is:

“An artist who specializes in using non traditional media…old books, cassettes, playing cards, magazines, credit cards…whatever I can find. It feels great to work with strange, older materials. Things that have a mind of their own.”

Here are a couple of examples of what she means by turning cassette tapes into brilliant pieces of art.

Fresh New Street Artist: Phil Lumbang

This guy, Phil Lumbang, has been making some waves in the street art world recently so I figured I better jump on the bandwagon before it gets too late. In truth, he does some really cool, progressive stuff and actually has an honest and respectable message behind his work. He was or is an assistant to Shepard Fairey and that right there says a good amount about the company he keeps and the people he’s impessed. Here’s a quote from the artist and a few more pictures of his work:

“The message is clear, a black bear plus a polar bear equals a panda bear and to me it means equality, which is just a simple equation. Painting my first mural sparked something inside me and began to fuel an interest I never knew I had. A little after I started painting an old man pulled up and told me what I was doing was “stupid.†Despite his comment I continued painting. Moments later a cop pulls up to Estaban, my friend who was filming, and starts to talk to him. Not really knowing what do I ran across the street to greet the officer. After a short conversation with him, not only did he let me keep painting but he also gave me a boost of confidence. I suppose it didn’t hurt that this happened on a Saturday afternoon and I was using a brush instead of a spray can.”

Giant Hello Kitty Eats NYC

0

I’m giving birth to brand new category on The Jailbreak today! As of now, we’re going to be using our iPhones to catalog and tag cool public/street art on the blog.

I hope we can find ways to geotag these at some point but till then we’ll just make do with old fashioned directions like this…

53rd & Park Ave, NYC – I don’t know how I’ve never seen these giant hello kitty sculptures before but they’re now amongst my favorite outdoor sculptures in New York. In spite of looking like papier mâché, I can assure you they are welded metal and not going away any time soon.
