Regenerating Human Fingers

It’s a little-known fact (outside of my personal circles) that, in addition to authoring this blog, I also sculpt all the toys for Jailbreak. What’s even less-known though, is that this sculptor lost a fingertip last summer at Burning Man. (It’s a long story involving art, bells, and helicopters but I’ll leave all that to your imagination.) Anyway, last Sunday, I got a phone call early in the morning telling me to turn on CBS.
There was a show about a man named Lee Spievack who had lost about an inch of his finger in an accident. He’d managed to regrow the tip of his finger, like a starfish or a salamander might. (The picture above is Mr. Spievack’s regenerated finger) He did it using a powder made of pig bladders that his brother, a Harvard scientist, had sent to him saying he’d seen it do remarkable things. About six weeks later, he’d regrown his entire finger tip, nail and all. There’s going to be a clinical trial this summer, using soldiers whose hands were seriously damaged in Iraq or Afghanistan.
I’ve got my fingers crossed!
